During my visit to Prague, I came across a Pilsner Urquell themed pub called, “The Pub”. It is one of a chain of pubs around the Czech Republic (there are actually two in Prague, the one in the old town that I visited and another in Prague II), with a rather interesting and original gimmick: You can pull your own beer!!!
As you come into “The Pub”, you pass the heart of the establishment, which consists of huge cylindrical vessels that look like something out of an episode of Doctor Who. These are what keep the dozens of tables, on two floors, stocked up with the real “King of Beers”.
At the far end of the pub, there is a huge scoreboard, which lists all the active tables in Prague, as well as the other pubs in the Czech Republic, so you can see how well you and your friends are doing compared to your fellow drinkers.
What is most amazing though is that despite the gimmicks and the commercialism, and despite the fact that you are in the centre of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, this superb pilsner beer, the best of its type in the world, is yours for only 34 CZK a half litre (just less than a pint), which is about a third of what it would cost you in a run-of-the-mill pub in England!!!
