Halloween may be a big holiday in the UK and an even bigger one in the States, but here in Slovakia it is actually the following day that is celebrated more. All Saints Day is a public holiday in the Slovak Republic and a chance to remember the dead.
Throughout the country, the meticulously kept cemeteries are visited by a procession of families throughout the day, and as dusk approaches the candle lit graves pay a fitting vigil to all our loved ones, who may be gone but are not forgotten.
As a child, I loved dunking for apples and dressing up in Hallowe’en costumes, collecting sweets and candy from the neighbourhood, whilst trick-or-treating with my friends. However, few holidays are as beautiful or as moving as the 1st November, in Slovakia.
