Day 2 of our holiday was spent in the delightful town of Kremnica, famous for its Mint, which has been minting coins since the fourteenth century. There are a number of interesting museums to visit in the town, which do a splendid job of showcasing Kremnica’s history.

The town is also full of many interesting monuments, such as the town gate, Kremnica castle and the Plague Column.
Following a lovely lunch in a restaurant nearby the town’s Mint, we headed north a few miles to the village of Kremnicke Bane, whose claim to fame is that it is situated in the exact centre of Europe – so we really had arrived at the Heart of Europe!

There is no fanfare to mark the geographic centre of Europe, no tacky souvenir shops, no tourist attractions, not much of anything. Just a simple plaque, next to a monastery.
