by Janosik

Queen Elizabeth II will visit Slovakia today, spending Thursday in Bratislava and Friday in the High Tatras. It has been reported that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will get to ‘meet the people’ during their short stay, supposedly strolling through the “Old Town” at around noon, today.

The Queen is also due to unveil an iron sculpture representing the Iron Curtain, by Slovak artist Milan Lukáč, close to Devín Castle. The sculpture will be placed at the spot where a barbed-wire border fence used to stand, during the Cold War, separating Slovakia and Austria. The sculpture contains plaques with two quotes by Winston Churchill, who first warned the world of the possibility of an Iron Curtain, in a speech in 1946.

On Friday, the Queen will visit the High Tatras’ town of Stary Smokovec, before attending an Ice Hockey match in Poprad’s Ice Hockey Stadium.
