A highlight of any trip to Prague has got to be a stroll along the Charles Bridge. Unfortunately, at the present time, about a third of the bridge is covered in scaffolding, as large parts of the bridge are being renovated. However, I was able to stick my iPhone through a fence and get this snap of the statue of John of Nepomuk.
John of Nepomuk is a Czech saint, who drowned in the river Vltava on the orders of King Wencesles, for not revealing the queen of Bohemia’s confessional. He is generally considered to be the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional, and because of the nature of his death, the patron saint of floods.
Legend has it that if you touch the gold area of the statue and make a wish, it will come true. On a previous trip to Prague, I was told that this was just a story for the tourists. The actual place you need to touch is on a little cross (marking the place where John of Nepomuk was pushed into the river), which is etched into the wall of the bridge, just up from where the statue is situated. The exact place where chunks of the wall were getting taken away for renovation. Let’s hope that once the builders have left and the Charles Bridge reconstruction is completed, everything is still where it is supposed to be!
